Riboet Verhalenkunst — a collective of artists who can trace their roots to Indonesia and the Moluccas, is noticing the gradual disappearance of traditional Asian tokos. In the exhibition Toko Mokum, they chronicle several iconic Dutch Indonesian and Indonesian tokos in Amsterdam and show how younger generations are reimagining the toko experience in modern-day sense. Tokos have forever influenced and altered the tastes of Amsterdam’s populace. ‘Just stopping by the toko’ is synonymous with getting an affordable takeaway meal that feels like home.
This exhibition is part of the 3rd edition of the Collecting the City project in Amsterdam Museum.
